As she was reading something very beauty-full took place, as she read each page, she didn't just read it, she read it like it was her. It went from just working through the words to having a strong sense oh! Each page is about me! This young girl is ridiculously cute, a bit of a tom boy at times, she loves zombie stuff and her spider man pyjamas, so I had a moment where I was hesitant, unsure how she would take to this book as it was different to the books she normally reads, yet as she read it, it was like, of course she will be in love with the book, who wouldn't love a book that confirmed who you naturally were? In the moment after reading it, she held the book with absolute preciousness, smiling at the cover like she was holding a golden treasure asking if she can keep it. :))
I started to have chats with the students about this, as they naturally came to me to share their feelings about things and themselves. I knew this book would be read in the timing that supported them, not like it was months away, just simply warming them to the fact they are in fact beauty-full and amazing. The kids loved even when I play-fully told them this fact, despite them calling me a weird nerd to begin Yet they always came back for more... Until they too all came to me and told me they knew they were amazing. They just didn't feel they could tell me in front of their friends because they said you get teased and told you are up yourself if you do.
At this point I knew they were ready for such a beauty-full book, as they too would know this book was about them, without thinking those words were random to even say. With out calling me a weird-nerd for even introducing it, although that is kinda funny, it is important to remember the reality that not everyone holds this knowing, as circumstances in our lives cloud this beauty-full truth. I very much appreciate the fact that I know we are all innately beauty-full, yet just as the book says, sometimes people forget this.
I ended up reading the book again that night at babysitting to the young girl as she was tucked in bed, only this time I replaced some of the words with her name, and elaborated on all her completely loveable qualities. She was giggling, as we both were. There is a lot of space to have fun with this book. And enjoy feeling the beauty we are, just as everyone in the world is.
